- Contestants must submit two
(2) recorded performances that demonstrates their jazz vocal abilities. One
track will be used for the semi-finals and the other track will be used for the
finals. The main criteria for judging is how well an artist can sing a melody
and improvise* it.
- A contestant cannot be
signed with a major record label.
- Only vocalists can enter. An
instrumental competition is planned for the near future. A singer/pianist will
only be judged as a singer. Instrumental solos are permitted on the track but
will not effect the judging.
- A contestant can enter only
once. The contestant may be on other recordings submitted by other artists that
enter.
- Only individuals can enter.
Individuals of a group can enter and use a recording of their group but will be
judged and represented as a solo contestant.
- On the 2 tracks submitted,
the contestant can be a solo performing artist (e.g. a solo pianist who sings)
or perform with a group.
- The tracks can be originals
composed by the contestant or standards. This is not a competition for
composers. Even if the track is composed by the contestant, the contestant will
be judged for their performance, not the composition.
- The contestant doesn't have
to be the leader in the group. The contestant does have to sing the melody on
the track and also solo or "stylistically improvise" the melody a second
time**.
- The contestant must be over
the age of 14.
*Jazz is many things to many
people. Some are of the opinion that jazz singing must include scat, improvised
or embellished sections, vocalese, a swing beat, etc. The organizers of this
competition have certain criteria which we equally apply to each entry. If an
entry is deemed not to be a jazz track, we reserve the right to refuse the
contestant's application to this competition and refund the entrance fee.
**The melody must be restated a
second time at least in part. Singing from the bridge and out is acceptable.
